Description	This bowed lute is carved entirely from a single piece of soft, unfinished wood. At the top a large scroll is carved in the shape of an open loop large enough to serve as a handle. The pegbox below it holds four pegs inserted from the sides. The short neck accommodates the playing hand in first position only. The body has the shape of an asymmetrical oval bowl. The back is rounded; the front open. The bowl is carved into a pinched shape at the center, forming two chambers, the upper one larger than the lower, but inside, the two chambers communicate with each other. The lower chamber is covered with animal hide nailed to the sides of the body, while the upper chamber is left open. A red and yellow polka dot cloth encircles the pinched section like a belt. A wide V-shaped bridge rests on an angle on the hide sound table. The strings, one of wire, the other three of monofilament nylon, are stretched parallel to the sound table, over the bridge, and are attached to a short wooden peg at the base of the instrument. The sides of the body are incised with some decorative Vs and lines outlining the curves of the instrument. A length of jute twine is inserted in a separate square hole carved as part of the scroll. This is a shoulder strap, to hold the instrument close to the body while playing it.
Materials	Wood, animal hide, nails, nylon and wire strings, twine.
Dimensions	total length 56 cm (22 in.); pegbox and scroll 17 cm (6.7 in.); neck 7 cm (2.8 in.); body 32 cm (12.6 in.); width and depth of body 13.5 cm x 9 cm (5.3 in. x 3.5 in.)
Accessories	Bow. It is a slightly bent, 49cm-long stick with horsehair tied to either end with twine. Three small brass pellet bells are tied to the tip and three more are tied to the middle of the bow.
Condition	Fair. The carving is rough and the instrument appears well used. There is a crack and a hole in the back of the body near the neck.
