About this collection

The histories of the City of Delaware, the Methodist Episcopal Church, and Ohio Wesleyan University are deeply intertwined. In a very real sense, the three grew up together. A confluence of events during the early years of the 19th century resulted in the birth of a beautiful city and a college nestled next to a Sulphur Spring.

What follows in imagery and text is the history of the city, the church, and the college up to 1900. For additional information, please view the Our Shared History:

As is true of most local history, there are "legends" and there are "facts." In many cases, it was difficult to decipher which was which. Furthermore, various historians differed in their accounts of when and how events took place. In many cases, primary source material (newspaper coverage right after events) was consulted to corroborate dates and stories. We welcome suggested corrections from users.

This project was funded through an Institute of Museum and Library Services LSTA grant awarded by the State Library of Ohio. The content does not necessarily reflect the position or policy of the granting agencies.
