The Oberlin Observer was a paper published at Oberlin College, once a week from 6 September 1979 – 22 May 1998. The paper provided articles and information about campus events, faculty and staff, and issues of concern for the broader Oberlin community. The intended audience of the Oberlin Observer was the faculty and staff of Oberlin College, but students, alumni, trustees and other individuals affiliated with the College had access to the paper.
In the first issue, 6 September 1979, Provost James Powell, wrote: “The Observer has been established in an attempt to remedy what many believe to be a lack of reliable and timely information about the College. We hope that the paper will help to build a stronger sense of community at Oberlin; we intend that at least it will provide an authoritative and accurate record of significant campus events.”
The Observer was replaced by the Oberlin Online News daily news service that debuted on 24 August 1998.
