News Editor Thirty years after one of the most controversial Supreme Court cases ever the original Roe of Roe v Wade gave her personal testimony and life story to the students of Denison University Students gathered in Swasey Chapel on Wednesday April 21 to listen to NormaMcCorvey Virtually unrecognizable by her real name McCorvey is better known as Jane Roe of the landmark 1973 supreme court case Roe v Wade which legalized abortion in the United States Roe or McCorvey was the lead plaintiff in the case McCorvey began her speech by saying that her intentions were New Campus Commons Comes to Life with By DAVID BERMAN Managing Editor The Ataris aCaliforniabased poppunk band will help break in the new campus common as the headlinerof this years Aestavalia concert The concert scheduled tobegin at 4 pm on Saturday May 1 is sponsored by the Student Activities Office SAO The Ataris have released three fulllength recordings and had a hit with theircoverof Don Henleys Boys of Summer Traditionally held around the time of the last day of classes Aestavalia was not held lastyear due to SAOs inability toprocure an appropriate venue Once we were unable to reserve Mitchell and Bancroft Field forourdesired dates it be Inside Story Celebrate African Education Week Sports Womens tennis takes this week conference championship see page 7 to convey her own life story and little more I have not come here this evening to change anyones mind but hopefully by the end of this evening well see what happens McCorvey then continued to relate how her experiences working at an abortion clinic in Texas led to her conversion not only in her opinion aboutabortion but also of her ownconversion to the Christian faith The abortionist would use his scalpel and other instruments of destruction to take the baby out piece by piece McCorvey said She later noted that her Christian faith and her prolife stance go handinhand She cannot imagine having one came clear that the event would not happen as intended said Nathan Hanke AssistantDirector of Student Activities The last Aestavaliaconcert held in 2002 brought hiphop groups Jurassic 5 and Blackalicious to campus Before finally choosing and booking The Ataris SAO also considered Ziggy Marley and Nickel Creek but conflicts prevented the latter two from coming We crossed many a bridge concerning genres said Hanke Hanke 0405 By JAALA BERKLEY Staff Writer Once again it is time to DCGA to allocate money for each of the studentorganizations on campus The amount allocated for DCGA budgets which came at just under 570000 this year is compiled of the activity fee paid by all students You can tell its April when people are complaining about DCGA budgets said Mike Jurek a senior class senator In the case of junior Amy Burgess the process can be frustrating I hate the budget process right now said Burgess who serves as the water polo club treasurer Jurek who served on the Two Main Residential Quads Lose Power By MEGAN SCHIFER EditorinChief Denison students have said they are in the dark whenreferring to current issues because of their isolated life atop the hill Yet last Wednesday April 21 students living on North and West Quads really were in the dark when residence halls lost electricity I do think it is important that all members of thecampus community remember one thing Denison does not generate its own power said President Dale T Knobcl Like any other school business or home fall Hanke said I lanke used the SAC concerts committee and other students as a sounding board for his own ideas Granted I am a young professional but I havelimitations he said Hankewanted to know what kind of music we were looking for and what kind of atmosphere we wanted said AmandaMcGlone a member of the StudentActivities Committee SAC This years Aestavalia will mark the first time the new Commons third straight see page 9 E Learn vict Festival DCGA finance committee in past years attributes much of the frustration over DCGA budgets to budget inflation on the part of student organizations Becky Bell former DCGAfinance chair and current finance committee member says that this process can be problematic Budget padding can be a problem but I dont think that groups do it maliciously she said Bell said she attributes the increase in proposed budgets to both miscommunicationbetween incoming and outgoing club officers and groups feeling that if they ask for a large amount they will get some of what they wanted Burgess said she wasunwilling to do this see 0405 page 2 we purchase electricity from a regional utility An Chonko Physical Plant director explained what caused the power outage The main high voltage wires feeding the west and north quads shorted out and blew a hole in one of them The cause is not known at this point and probably never will be known Students were then forced to do their work in the academic quad buildings that continued to have power or use flashlights The power outage was a bonding experience in Fellows computer lab said junior Taylor see Power page 3 Aestavalia campus common is used for a largescale concert event Its a really nice place for us to do things like this McGlone said McGlone who will assume the title of concerts chair for SAC in the fall favors openair venues I love outdoor festivaltype concerts she said The new
