| Description | This instrument is a long zither made of a wooden box with a slightly curved top. It has twelve strings, each with its own bridge. The bridges are made of wood, carved in a decorative inverted V shape. The strings are plucked with the right hand. The bridges determine the playing length of the string and are arranged to produce a descending scale as the player plucks from closest to farthest string. The left hand of the player presses the strings to the left of the bridges to obtain different pitches or to add vibrato or pitch bends. At the left end of the instrument, each string is tied to a heavy cotton rope and secured to the instrument with this rope. The extra lengths of these ropes are curled in a decorative cluster on top of the instrument. On the underside of the instrument are three sound holes of different shapes. |
