.P>aris, May 26 (By the Associated
Press).—Charles R. Crane, the American who has clashed with the French
military^authorlties In Syria, has told
a number of French senators that a
continuance of the French .mili|?tjy
administration of Syria fwaii co3t
France a half billion toi a billion
francs a year and fwill^require an
army of 100,000 troops^ Senator-Victor Berard has undertaken to present Mr| Crane's views]* to Premier
Poincare.
Mi\| Crane went^to the foreign office this afternoon, where he was received by M. Clinchanm director of
Asiatic affairs, which include Asia
Minor and Syria. k ,
No Sign of Legal Action.
Mr. Crane has not thus far had the
slightest intimation of any official
or legal action taken against him,
except ffrom newspapere inquiries
baseci on the press report from Cairo.
It appears that a check for*$l,000,
sighed by Mr. .# Crane, found I in
the. pocket'l of one of his Syrian
friends who took part in a demonstrative farewell to him at Damascus,
was seemingly the principal reason
for the. French military authorities in
Damascus to believe that the American was inciting sedition. The check
was for advance expenses in connection with a caravan journey into the
Interior which Mr. Crane had,planned|
for next autumn. £
t>r. Beronder, in whose pocket the
check was found, was one of eigh,t|
Syrians sentenced by French court-;:|
martial for varying terms of imprisonment fori participating in the farewell, which the French construed as
a riot. The doctor received the longest sentence, fifteen years. | He Is described by Mr. Crane as a brilliant
graduate of the college at Beirut, aj
